An early morning drive through the scenic Borneo countryside brings you to the Kota Belud weekly Sunday Market. Kota Belud is home to one of Sabah’s most famous and colourful weekly ‘tamu’, which is held every Sunday from 6 am to midday. The word ‘tamu’ actually means “meeting place”, and even today it is as much a market as a local gathering where traders from the surrounding areas come together to discuss the latest events. Watch happy rural folks exchange gossips in a relaxed mood while selling their home produce. Look out for the Bajau Horsemen, “Cowboys of the East”, who may appear in their colorful outfits displaying their horse-riding skills during the festivals. On the way back, stop by a pottery factory to shop for local souvenirs. (L)
